The lipstick is coming off the turkey...er, pig

Friday, September 19, 2008

Sarah Palin, the pig-in-lipstick that has recently caused Democrats to flee howling in terror, is rapidly losing her luster. Her favorability ratings have
plummeted below those of Obama, Biden, and McCain. People are starting to walk out of her speeches. And she's making gaffe after gaffe - yesterday she referred to a "Palin-McCain administration." And Obama's slim lead in the polls is back.

What happened? Well, first of all, beneath all the hoopla, Sarah Palin was just a weak candidate. She's an uneducated, out-of-touch governor of a far-away state with the population of a mid-size town. She sounds like a Canadian (
hockey mom?). She loves to talk but has no good ideas. And everyone knows that her selection was motivated by shallow demographic pandering - She's a woman, she'll get the Hillary supporters! She's conservative, she'll increase base turnout! But shallow demographic pandering obviously undermines the Republican claim to be more responsible leaders than the Democrats.

In fact, I still maintain that "The Speech" was only as popular as it was because the instant media feeding frenzy after her selection had lowered expectations so much. When she took the stage and was not actually a gibbering cretin, Republicans breathed a huge sigh of relief, and independents' heart went out to the cute pseudo-Canadian chick who was unfairly beaten on by the big bad media. But underneath, the weaknesses were still there.

Now the truth is out. Republicans, you picked a real turkey. And you're going to have to live with her right up to election day.
