The semi-intelligent designers of Intelligent Design

Concerning the current intelligent design controversy:

Background: Intelligent design's main argument is that the development of certain biological systems can't be explained by random processes, because these systems show "
irreducible complexity."

Two questions:

1. If a system is irreducibly complex, why does that imply that it was designed by an intelligent being?

2. Is it possible to show which systems are irreducibly complex and which are not? If so, how?

If ID advocates can't answer these questions, it doesn't mean that Darwinism is correct or should be the only theory taught in schools. But it would mean that people who actually
want some scientific debate should come up with some better alternatives.
